The skies here are a cold steel grey this morning, the wind whipping the trees in my yard with powerful gusts as Tropical Storm Debbie gets ready to drench the sunshine state with her swirling rain clouds. I couldn’t ask for a more perfect setting for me to try out a few of the horror games that have surfaced recently. My first stop: Infected: The Twin Vaccine.

The first thing that struck me with this game was the sleek modern design of the fonts and graphics. That might not be worth much to most people, but it’s very rare to find something so polished in a hidden object game that it made me pause to appreciate it. A hidden object game with modern style? That scored a point with me.
The next thing I noticed was that I could choose to customize my level of difficulty. I didn’t just have to choose between easy, normal, and expert. I could slide the bars of difficulty from super easy to really hard. This included how long the hint button took to load, how obvious the glints were in the game, and how long you had before you could skip the mini-games. What a fantastic idea! Let me choose how much of a challenge I wanted in the game! Naturally, I set them all to low since my hidden object finding skills are by no means on a professional level to say the least.

The game begins with a cut scene reporting the news. You quickly discover that the small town of Oxford has been quarantined due to a rampant virus that’s already claimed the lives of at least 150 people. The first known individuals to contract the virus were two twin girls. One survived. The other did not. Now, Theresa Morrisey, the surviving twin and the only know survivor of the virus, has gone missing somewhere in the town, and she may be the one and only key to stopping what could become a global epidemic.
I know what you’re thinking. Didn’t I see this movie before? Yeah, the storyline is very much in line with the movie I am Legend, where Will Smith’s character was immune to the deadly virus and so he was left to walk the streets of New York with virus carrying zombies trying to eat him. Only this story has no zombies… just bodies. And you encounter them in your journey, so I definitely would keep this game away from the little ones. There’s nothing cute or cuddly about Infected: The Twin Vaccine.

But, that’s not to say the graphics aren’t simply world-class amazing. They are beautifully done. Painted in grays and greens that are deeply shadowed and properly menacing. The game is littered with cut scenes that are dramatic and poignant, drawing you deeper and deeper into the story, helping you believe that danger lies around every corner.

You assume the role of a CIA agent who specializes in microbiology, a doctor well-equipped to handle the virus and put a stop to it if you are able to locate the missing girl.
The music was soft and almost unassuming, but laced with a small amount of panic just under the surface with an underlying beat that was fast paced and discordant. You would almost miss it if you weren’t paying attention, but if you weren’t careful, the music helped accentuate the feeling that you were racing against a clock, that if you didn’t hurry this virus would be the end of mankind. It helped give the game some backbone and added to the overall atmospheric immersion in the story.
While most of the gameplay was similar to your traditional point and click of a hidden object game, the hidden object scenes themselves were simply outstanding. A huge step above the traditional HOG scenes and extremely effective in holding my attention.

There were no pauses in the game to sift through meaningless piles of junk that make you question the sanity of the developers. If you were playing a hidden object game in a barn, you would find things that should be in a barn. And in order to find most of the objects, you would first have to find other objects or accomplish other tasks.
For example, I needed to get into a car. The door handle was rusted over. I had to find a drill, the drill bit, the battery for the drill, and an oil can. I needed to drill the barrel to get the oil and fill the can. In order to get the can, I needed to find the rungs of the ladder that were missing so I could climb up to get it from the window. It just all made sense. All the objects fit so well together that I didn’t have to extend my level of believability to enjoy the game, which I absolutely loved and appreciated.

Overall, Infected: The Twin Vaccine was an immensely solid and extremely enjoyable hidden object game that had everything you could ask for in a thriller game. If the thought of the virus doesn’t scare the pants off you, then maybe the creepy looking bear of a man running around town with a gas mask on will… either way, I’d recommend putting this one on your list of must-tries in the near future, because you’re not going to want to miss this experience.
