When I first heard of Deadly Voltage: Rise of the Invincible, the image of a B-rated movie that went straight to DVD popped into my head. Thankfully, the game is not as second rate as the title would suggest.

Title

Trapped in a small town with psychotic, malfunctioning robots mixes suspense and caution well enough to keep me dialed in. An exhilarating storyline and solid roleplaying elements really ground this game and make it a worthwhile play.

Deadly Voltage: Rise of the Invincible starts off in a tizzy with a captivating cutscene that sets up the premise of the game. This time it’s the brains, not the brawn that is responsible for saving this small town. As a scientist, the task at hand is to stop whatever is coming and the town is ground zero.

There are power lines strewn about and electricity arcing every where, and a forcefield keeping everything in. I was left to muddle around the mystery and figure out the story myself with dozens of broken down robots strewn about like in The Walking Dead

Robots

Luckily the scientist mentor that sent you on the journey had the sense to arm you with a couple useful gadgets. You’re going to have be careful not to get zapped yourself while navigating around town to put an end to the madness.

The visuals behind Deadly Voltage: Rise of the Invincible were pretty average, but what they did with the cutscenes should cause quite a buzz. The developers chose to use cutscenes to drive the story, which worked well to keep the tension and suspense going. Watch out for that bolt of electricity coming toward your face!

Spark

With all the effort that was invested into the cutscenes, I was surprised that it wasn’t supported with any voice acting.  The music was also bland and got a little repetative after a while. Deadly Voltage: Rise of the Invincible could have benefited in the graphics and sound department if it was supported with stronger visuals and voice performances.

Pacing for Deadly Voltage: Rise of the Invincible was dictated a lot by the mini cutscenes in between intervals of action. I enjoyed the role playing elements of the game like scavenging for items to get to other needed objects or to unlock a new area. They were able to make it entertaining with a zoom feature, which focuses in on an area of importance within the scene or room you are exploring.

Graphics

Many of the puzzles I encountered at first were basically hidden object games. Deadly Voltage: Rise of the Invincible has other types of complex puzzles, but it just takes a while to introduce them.

For people who are new to the genre, the game unfolds at a reasonable pace. Veterens of the genre may unfortunately find the pace of the game a little slow. Ultimately, Deadly Voltage: Rise of the Invincible is a great game with some minor hindrances that held it back from the high voltage thriller that it could have been.
